LeFort takes wet and windy Porongurups win
A small field of riders braved wet and windy conditions in the Albany Cycle Club’s Porongurups Handicap on Saturday afternoon.
The 55km contest from Mt Barker to the Porongurups and return was a battle of stamina and race smarts with no shortage of hills.
Set off first the solo Lucy Wellstead faced a tough fight to stay ahead of the chasing packs.
Off 7.5 minutes club stalwart Jim Lie, newcomer Mark Boynton and George Law worked well together to hold off the chasing groups.
Starting just 90 seconds behind it took first-time racer Rick Eikelboom, Michael Gardiner, Jessica Waldron and Paul Terry at least 15km to catch the trio.
Lucy Wellstead was swept up not long after and the riders combined forces to stay ahead of the chasing scratch and chopping block groups.
Mountain goat Mike Staude, Spencer Tebbutt and Peter Wilshaw (14 minutes) made massive gains to be only two minutes behind the lead group at the turn.
Off scratch Beau LeFort, Lachlan Waldron and Brett Dal Pozzo, crossing over from mountain biking, pushed hard to come within two minutes of chopping block by the turn. As Lachlan Waldron drifted off the back the group’s pace slowed and it took LeFort and Dal Pozzo another 20km to finally catch the combined pack ahead.
The pace surged as riders tested their legs towards the finish until Mike Staude was the only one able to hang on to the fast finishing scratch pair.
LeFort opened up his sprint 100m from the finish to take a comfortable win and fastest time (1:24:51) from Dal Pozzo with Mike Staude third. Jess Waldron (2:03:16) was first and fastest female.
